Our Favorite Mythical Creatures & Where You Can Find Them

Humans are interesting animals. Creativity seeps through our veins. I’m not entirely sure who came up with the following creatures, but it must have taken some incredibly unique (and perhaps problematic) imagination to bring these things into being.

A horse with a horn. A woman’s body with a fish tail. A bird that turns to ash, but never dies.

Mythical creatures are fascinating, so its no wonder they inhabit the many fantasy stories we all love and cherish. Here are five of our favorites.

The Resurrectionist Chalks the Walk at NYC’s The Strand August 18!

Performance art in the street is pretty cool. The art of The Resurrectionist is really cool. Bring the two together live, on a sidewalk? Amazing.

On August 18th, from 11 to 2, come on out to New York City's fabulous Strand bookstore to see author/illustrator E.B. Hudspeth recreate his book cover in chalk, in 3D—on the sidewalk. Stop and watch on the store's Broadway side and see the cover take chalky shape on the ground, then stop inside for your own (portable) copy of The Resurrectionist. (And, in the meantime, check out this interview with the author)

Let’s Write a Novel in a Month: Part I

RC: Hi everybody, Rick Chillot here. You know what I like? Free time, sanity, a pain-free spine, a good night's sleep, what's left of my hairline…the list goes on and on. So when I came across the one-month-novel-writing event Camp NaNoWriMo, from the people behind National Novel Writing Month, my horror could not have been greater. And yet, I kept thinking about it. Is it truly possible to write a 50,000 word novel in one month? What would that experience be like? Would I absolutely hate it, or just moderately hate it? In the end, it seemed the only way to punish myself for even considering this was to sign up and try it, with the hope that the emotional scars would prevent me from making similar decisions in the future.

New York Book Launch for The Resurrectionist on June 17th!

Quirk is thrilled to announce a book launch and gallery show for The Resurrectionist: The Lost Works of Dr. Spencer Black by artist and debut novelist E.B. Hudspeth in Brooklyn, NY on June 17th!
A Vanity Fair Hot Type pick, The Resurrectionist is a cross between cross between Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Gray’s Anatomy, and offers two incredible books in one. The powerHouse Arena in Dumbo, Brooklyn will host an event featuring a gallery showing of Hudspeth’s artwork from the book, a discussion with the author moderated by Aaron Sagers of CNN.com and MTVGeek, followed by a book signing.
Best of all, the event is free and open to the public! It’s guaranteed to be a great time, so come on out!
