Book Club Recs for Fictional BFFs

You know the old saying: friends who read together, stay together. While we’re big fans of book clubs, deep down we know that the best book clubs aren’t clubs at all – they’re pairs of best friends agreeing to read the same book, just so the other doesn’t have to go through all those literary feelings alone. As we continue our socially distanced friendships, two-person book clubs are one of the only things keeping our spirits up. So, we wanted to spread that joy to our favorite fictional BFFs. Enjoy!
Leslie Knope and Ann Perkins
It’s no secret that Leslie Knope has very strong opinions about the boys of Friday Night Lights. (Sorry, Leslie. But we’re team Tim Riggins over here.) But we’re willing to bet she’s never read the book that this fantastic show is based on. So, we’re recommending that Leslie and Ann read Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger – and you definitely don’t have to be a fan of the show or football to get into it. (You’re welcome, Ann Perkins.) This exploration of small-town high school football is fascinating and is sure to give these best friends a lot to talk about over Grizzle video calls.

Cher Horowitz and Dion Davenport
Hang around Cher and Dion long enough and they’re sure to bring up The Taming of the Clueless by Ian Doescher, which is basically their life story, but in old timey language. (They know it’s iambic pentameter, but what would their classmates think if they let on that they’re actually incredibly smart?). And while it’s totally rad that these two have a book all about them, we’re going to recommend they branch out to another school (and another time period!) altogether with Much Ado About Mean Girls by the very same Ian Doescher. We cannot wait to eavesdrop on all their car phone conversations.

Lilly Moscovitz and Mia Thermopolis
When your best friend is a princess of a small European country, staying on the same page can be, um, difficult. Which is why we’re recommending Lilly Moscovitz and Mia Thermopolis of princess of Genovia fame read The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan together. Mia is sure to have all sorts of opinions about the royal logistics of this novel (and the real royalty this novel is based on), and Lilly is sure to fall in love with these characters, hard exterior and cable access talk show be damned. And if Mia and Lilly aren’t all royal-ed out, they can continue their journey through Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan’s fictional universe with The Heir Affair, which comes out in July!

Lane Kim and Rory Gilmore
Rory and Lane have had a long distance and bookish friendship since the early 2000s, but that doesn’t mean they can’t use a two-person book club to deepen their friendship. We’re recommending Linda Holmes’ delightful Evvie Drake Starts Over. They’ll love the small-town element – which will be nostalgic for Rory and affirming for Lane. And the not-quite-love story of it all is sure to give them both plenty to talk about over FaceTime.
