It’s National Promposal Day today and while prom is looking a little different this year (okay, a lot different) there’s still room to get creative and flex your promposal skills. In honor of this fun and festive day, we’re reading some of our favorite prom-centric young adult novels. Let’s dance!

You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson

Leah Johnson’s debut novel You Should See Me in a Crown takes readers through an incredible journey toward prom. It’s a little over the top, she knows, but at Liz Lightly’s Indiana high school, prom is everything. Candidates for prom court are sent through a gauntlet of public events, all in the name of winning prom king or queen. One last detail: the prom king and queen are each awarded a scholarship to the college of their choice. Oh and Liz is starting to fall for one of her competitors, the smart and funny new girl Mack. This book is delightfully queer and so much fun. A must read for prom aficionados of all ages!

Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han

If you’re a big To All the Boys… fan, you already know that the Netflix adaptation of Always and Forever, Lara Jean is full to the brim with promposals. Dig even deeper into Lara Jean’s senior year with this delightful book about what it means to fall in love with the person you’ve become. Of course there’s a prom. (It’s senior year, after all.) But what’s even more thrilling is the way Lara Jean comes into her own.

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

The ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball isn’t exactly a prom, but it’s prom adjacent in all the best ways. If you’ve ever dreamed about a cosplay themed promposal – or heck, a cosplay themed prom! – Geekerella by Ashley Poston is the book for you. This book is one part romance, one part love letter to geek culture, and totally delightful. The friendships at the core of this book are so incredible and we guarantee that you’ll be rooting for Elle Wittimer and Darien Freeman’s Starfield-centric love story the whole way through.

The Prom by Saundra Mitchell

So many of us fell in love with the musical The Prom through the recent Netflix adaptation. But did you know that there’s a novelization too? The fun truly doesn’t stop. Emma Nolan and Alyssa Green want their whole school to know that they’re a couple, with the plan to debut at prom. But there’s only one problem: Alyssa isn’t out yet, and her mom is leading the charge to prevent same-sex couples from going to prom together. And when a group of washed up Broadway stars shows up in their small Indiana town to take a stand, hijinks – and a deeply emotional story about being true to yourself – ensue.
