Here at Quirk Books, there’s no shortage of strong female lead energy. Our books are full of badass heroines and messy leading ladies. So, today we’re celebrating our shelf of incredible characters, letting them jump right off the page and into some really excellent book recommendations. Let’s get started!
Elle from Geekerella
We loved seeing Elle save her cosplay dreams through repair and inventive construction, which is why we’re recommending Mending Matters: Stitch, Patch, and Repair Your Favorite Denim and More by Katrina Rodabaugh. The title sounds a little instruction manual, we know. But this book is so much more than step-by-step mending instructions. It’s an introduction to slow fashion, sustainable living, and wonderfully creative ways to look cute while saving the planet – and your favorite jeans. We know Elle’s in a serious relationship with a movie star now, but that doesn’t mean she can’t save her favorite clothes with some seriously beautiful sashiko stitching.

Mia from Siri, Who Am I?
When Mia wakes up from her coma, she has no idea who she is. And it’s a terrifying prospect, but we think that she’ll relate to the blissfully unaware protagonist of Ottessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation. Sure, Mia wasn’t out for a year. But that’s what makes this book recommendation perfect. While Mia grapples to piece her life back together, she can laugh about the lengths she’d have to go through to do this (1) on purpose and (2) for such a long time. It’s wild!

Patricia from The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires
When Patricia Campbell is faced with a real live vampire, it’s up to her and the rest of her book club to disrupt their predictable suburban lives and slay this vampire. We’re recommending that Patricia bring Bram Stoker’s Dracula into the book club. It’s a departure from their usual true crime and suspense, but Count Dracula is the original stake-in-the-heart, garlic fearing, blood sucking monster. There’s really no better vampire slaying manual out there.

Rosie from Bookish and the Beast
While we wish there was a real life Starfield book series that we could recommend to Rosie, we’re going to have to settle for the real thing: the new series of Star Wars books. Specifically, Star Wars: Resistance Reborn. And yes, it’s going to be difficult to convince her that Poe and Finn won’t end up together. (Gotta love a ship that the actors actually endorse.) And it’s certainly not going to be as satisfying as the Starfield books she grew up on. But if we want Rosie to live in our universe – and we do! – she’s just going to have to read some books that exist in this universe too.

Kris from We Sold Our Souls
Sick of that Best Western night manager life, Kris is on a road trip to reunite her band and reclaim her life. And we all know that road trips are full of questionable motels and restless nights away from home – plus that acclimation to a new sleep schedule. (Night shift will really wreck you!) Which is why we’re recommending Patti Smith’s Just Kids as a way to wind down at the end of each day. It’s a mirror into the kind of musician life Kris wants to get back, plus it’s full of aspirational Patti Smith-isms. Because we all need little reminders of why we do what we do.
