Books to Fill the Void Now That Supernatural is Over

Posted by Rose Moore

After fifteen years, Supernatural has finally come to an end. Sam and Dean Winchester, having beaten death, the Devil, demons, angels, and monsters of all shapes and sizes, are now taking on God himself, and no one knows how these Wayward Sons will carry on. All any fan knows is that this is the end of the road for the show.

And with a show that has been on the air for a decade and a half, this ending is going to leave a serious void in most fans’ lives. Where are the lovers of monster-hunting and emotional turmoil going to go next? Thankfully, we’ve got the books to help wean everyone off the Winchesters, and bring them back to the (mercifully monster-free) real world.

Cursed Objects by J. W. Ocker

Warning! This book may be cursed…

The Winchesters deal with plenty of cursed objects in their wanders (who can forget the lucky rabbit’s foot?), but what about real life creepy items? J. W. Ocker explores the true stories behind all kinds of infamously strange and potentially cursed items, from the doll that inspired The Conjuring to the ring that inspired The Hobbit.

Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix

A haunted house story for the IKEA world, Grady Hendrix provides all the pieces for a great horror story (with no assembly required). Set in a furniture store where mysterious damage keeps happening overnight, Horrorstör sees store employees taking on the various monsters (which have to be better than some customers!). Much like Supernatural, there’s some humor, horror, and ganking things that go bump in the night.

How to Survive a Horror Movie by Seth Grahame-Smith

The perfect read for anyone who has ever wondered how they might fare if they were to join forces with Sam and Dean in their fight against the forces of darkness. Seth Grahame-Smith tackles any situation that you might encounter in the world of horror movies, from abandoned buildings to sweet-talking local sheriffs. Sam and Dean could even learn a thing or two (although they may also be able to write their own version of this handbook by now!).

Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero

In Meddling Kids, Edgar Cantero plays with some classic tropes—the team of kid detectives, the reuniting of childhood friends who faced a horror, and of course, all the classic monsters that make horror stories this much fun. For those who particularly loved the flashbacks in Supernatural to Sam and Dean’s childhood (and who doesn’t love watching tiny Sam and tiny Dean looking out for each other?) this is a great nostalgic monster-killing read.

Justice League Dark from DC Comics

For those who are going to miss the visual splendor of Supernatural, going the comic route might be the best choice for some monster-hunter reading. Of course, you could always check out the Supernatural comics themselves (from DC’s Wildstorm imprint), which cover prequels and side-stories, but for something a little new (and longer-running), Justice League Dark is the best choice. A team of magic-wielding (and magic-fighting) superheroes like Constantine and Swamp Thing, this is one of the best Supernatural-style titles out there (and of course, fans can also watch the short-lived Constantine TV series as well).

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman

Finally, a classic that will appeal to anyone who loves the relationships in the series more than the monsters—and who definitely misses the relationships that the Winchesters had with Crowley and Cas. Good Omens has also made its way onto the small screen, but Gaiman’s book is still worth the read, as the odd couple of an angel and a demon attempt to avert the apocalypse.
