Bookish Events in Philadelphia: March 20th – 26th

Posted by Maryan Captan

The universe is freaky tonight: a solar eclipse, a supermoon, the equinox; we’re half expecting (and half prepared for) an extraterrestrial invasion. Happy equinox! Happy spring! We suggest you sew some flowers into your hair, put on some purple lipstick, and bring your new Neptunian bestie to one (or all!) of these weekly lit events:

“The Lenticular,” a play by Kevin Killian marries poetry and playwriting, language and the absurd. On a bewitching night like this one, why wouldn’t you want to join the cast, composed of Philadelphia poets Jenn McCreary, Philip Mittereder, Jason Mitchell, and Mel Bentley perform Friday, March 20th for the one night only (!) performance? This will be the first ever staged performance of “The Lenticular” so don’t miss out! Vox Populi. 8pm.

We love when visual artists and writers come together to make something beautiful. The Paradigm Gallery + Studio is hosting a special book reading and exhibition for “The Hunger of the Cheeky Sisters,” a collection of ten tales by author Laura Madeline Wiseman, illustrated by Philly artist Lauren Rinaldi. Join seven readers on Sunday March 22nd as they navigate the precise, feminine, and sensual language of Wiseman’s cheeky stories. 3pm.

After reveling in Wiseman’s work at Paradigm, hop over to West Philly for Random Name Poetry at Dahlek Paradise on Sunday March 22nd. A new location for Random Name, Sunday evening will feature poets Ryan Eckes and Brandon Holmquist. Not only are these two s ome of our favorite Philly poets but Dahlek’s Ethiopian food and chill vibes are perfect for a Sunday night reading. 7pm.

Join Amber Art and Design for Push/Pull: a Procession of Healing, an artistic response to the 30th anniversary of the MOVE bombing in West Philadelphia. The procession will move through the second floor of the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Wednesday March 25th.

Featuring poets, performers, and scholars, this free event encourages all to participate in a procession to “honor life, loss, and the dynamic legacies of our communities.” 6pm. Join us at the Brandywine Workshop on Thursday March 26th for Moonstone Poetry Presents: Exceptional Young Poets featuring award winning poets Sojourner Ahebee, Siduri Beckman, and Soledad AlfaroAllah.

Each poet’s unique style and voice relay their experiences as teenagers, women, and individuals navigating the often unpredictable waters of life in Philadelphia. This event is hosted by Philadelphia Poet Laureate Frank Sherlock. 6pm.
