Video Game Scores to Listen to While Reading

[Photo by Sound On from Pexels]

Here at Quirk we love video games with all our nerdy hearts, and since National Video Games Day is September 12th and we also love books, we thought we’d combine the two and pair some of our favorite video game soundtracks with your favorite book genres.

Many of the following scores include tracks with more distracting sound from grand choral movements to light breathing (thank you, horror genre), so you may have to filter out some tracks for a more personalized playlist, depending on your individual tastes. But if you’re looking for some nice background music while you jump into your next adventure, romance—what have you—these soundtracks are a good place to start.

Iconic Songs Meet Iconic Books

[Photo by Expect Best from Pexels]

You know that song you just can’t get out of your head? You know the one. It lives in your bones and becomes your own private DJ, scoring your day as you wash your hair and do the dishes. And sometimes it’s a good thing – a dance party in your living room, the whole nine yards. But sometimes it’s an earworm in the worst possible way. Today, we’re pairing those iconic songs with some equally iconic books – books that make us want to dance and sing along. Go ahead and let that song get stuck in your head. Because we’re ready to read through it!

Literary References in Beatles Songs

Have you seen Yesterday yet? While we think the concept is very entertaining – a musician wakes up one day to discover he’s the only person who remembers The Beatles – it’s a world we definitely don’t want to live in. Imagine not knowing a single Beatles song. Not even "Piggies!"(Okay, yeah. We get it. No one actually likes "Piggies.") But imagine how many Beatles literary references we’d lose!

Matching Books To Ariana Grande Songs

Bookworms may sometimes find that they spend so much time indoors with a good book (or twelve) that pop-culture passes them by. But even those who have had to have their noses surgically removed from the inside of their favorite novels have heard of Ariana Grande. The Grammy award-winning singer has come a long way since she first appeared as an actress on Nickelodeon. She's racked up awards and is now lauded for her attitude, social media posts, charity work, and for speaking out about feminism and other issues.

While many of her songs focus on all the possible permutations of love (and the lack of love), Grande also sings about everything from work and money to her fabulous female friends. Just like a good book, her songs capture attention and tell a great story, so we’ve decided to match some of her biggest hits with these book pairs.

Giraffes on Horseback Salad: The Soundtrack

Big news! There's a musical component to the graphic novel Giraffes on Horseback Salad: Salvador Dali, the Marx Brothers, and the Strangest Movie Never Made: a soundtrack for the book!

While the album will not officially come out until about a month after Giraffes on Horseback Salad goes on sale, author Josh Frank wanted to share the musical book experience earlier by offering three songs you can listen to online starting March 19, 2019. And here's the coolest part: these songs are "sung" in Giraffes on Horseback Salad, so you can pair these up while reading the graphic novel. Ready for things to get surreal?
