Everyone’s favorite teenage witch, Sabrina, is about to make her way back to the screen. Making her way into her third season on Netflix, Sabrina Spellman has changed considerably since she was played by Melissa Joan Hart in the ‘90’s. The current incarnation embodied by Mad Men alumni Kiernan Shipka is a tough young woman who is literally taking on the forces of hell. The new season of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will see her traversing the dark pit and we at Quirk thought she might need a few book recommendations to help her navigate the toughest parts of her trip.

To Reign in Hell by Steven Brust

Lucifer has often been maligned in literature and in churches over the years, but if Sabrina really wants to make it out on the back end of her little adventure in Hell, she may want to consider, even for the briefest moment, The Devil’s side of his story. In what is conceivably Stephen Brust’s best novel, the author explores what led to Lucifer’s fall from heaven and brought the once top angel to his position as the king of the underworld.

Inferno by Dante Alighieri

Traversing the darker corners of the afterlife can be trying, but fortunately for Sabrina, Dante and Virgil have trod the Nine Circles before her. This might be a good one to keep in her back pocket, a roadmap of sorts which may eventually lead her to Purgatory and perhaps even Paradise. She may as well bring the whole divine comedy with her.

Damned by Chuck Palahniuk

It is, of course, possible that Dante got the afterlife wrong which is why it would be good for Sabrina and her friends to familiarize themselves with other possible interpretations of the afterlife. Maybe it is like Palahniuk’s work in which the dead are forced to do horrible tasks for eternity like making telemarketing calls to Earth while people are eating their dinners.

Horns by Joe Hill

Sabrina really walked a fine line last season between being a good and decent person and turning into a full on bride of Lucifer. She pressed her dark powers as far as she could go without crossing the line, but it is a slippery slope, all she needs to do is read the story of Ig Perrish, who slowly over the course of Joe Hill’s novel turned into a devil.

Spawn 1-100 by Todd McFarlane and The Spawn Team and Angela 1-3 by Neil Gaiman And Greg Cappulo

This is a big chunk of comic book lore, while Spawn is the longest running creator owned comic book ever with over 300 issues, these 103 comic books could be a great help if Sabrina needs to fight her way out of hell. While tied to the demon Malebolgia with an unbreakable contract, Al “Spawn” Simmons, works his way up toward fighting himself free of his damnation.

Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlowe

Deals with The Devil, that’s where it all starts and that is where it all ends. Marlowe knew it well when he wrote this Jacobean era play. The deal looks sweet at first, but then over time, it really bites Faustus in the butt. The moral of the story is basically to be careful before signing any contracts. It’s too bad Sabrina has already signed her name in The Dark Lord’s book before reading this one.
