Toby's Book Recommendation: The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger

Our dog, Toby, his favorite book was the Catcher in the Rye. I think he liked it because he could relate to the main character, Holden. He felt unsure about his future, unsure how he fit in. I think he was ambivalent about being domesticated.

Mandy's Book Recommendation: The Butter Battle Book by Dr. Seuss

Ever since visiting a 19th century farm and learning about a butter churn treadmill that can be powered by a dog, Mandy has been regularly chastised for NOT making butter. In an effort to figure out what the hell butter is and why she takes heat for not making any, she bought the Dr. Seuss book and now it’s her favorite. While she’s totally unaware that it’s actually an anti-war parable about an ever-escalating arms race leading to mutually assured destruction, she really likes the illustrations. But sadly, she has made ZERO progress in the butter-making department.

The book's language is pithy, yet eloquent. The pacing? Relentless. And the relationship that develops between the protagonist and his hat-wearing lady friend is complex, riveting, and heartbreaking. The book is a timeless classic."
