Zombies represent some of our scariest dreams—dying, destruction, invasion, an overall death of society as we know it. They are our collective nightmare. We fear them but we are obsessed with them because they make us question what we would do at the end of the world. Would we step up to the plate and come out guns blazing or would we cower and hide in our basement to try to wait it out? We consume zombie-themed media in the hopes we’ll find inspiration for our inevitable demise in the zombiepocalypse. Though this list could’ve been forever long, the following are some of the best when it comes to undead-ass-kicking inspiration.

Michonne from The Walking Dead

Smart, resourceful, kind, and a complete badass, who else could have captured two zombies, tied them to her, and used them as a smell-shield against other Walkers? Michonne is a true zombie ass kicker—in both the comics and the TV show—and she wields her Katana like a second arm. Plus, she killed one of the creepiest villains on TWD, the Governor. We’d want her on our team for sure.

Tallahassee from Zombieland

Not only is Tallahassee played by the ever wonderful Woody Harrelson, he’s also totally terrifying for zombies. He doesn’t let anything get in his way when searching for true glory in the face of certain destruction—the one last Twinkie. He’ll use whatever he can to kill, one time even bashing a zombie over the head with a banjo. What could be more badass than that? Even though being in Tallahassee’s company probably means you’ll be safe, we urge you to not forget to #DoubleTap.

Shaun from Shaun of the Dead

Okay, he might not actually be a great zombie killer, and is definitely the least skilled person on this list, but the fact that he was some ordinary bloke that became an absolute (hilarious) hero puts him on this list. Though his aim was actually terrible, he was resourceful and overcame British politeness to get the job done.

Peter from Dawn of the Dead

It was hard to choose the best zombie killer from this classic movie, but we had to go with Peter for his willingness to sacrifice should the situation need it. Peter was brave and strong, and loyal to the point of fulfilling his friend’s wish to kill him should he return from the dead (which he did).

Ben from Night of the Living Dead

Ben kicked zombie ass and took names. Bonus points for not only being of the best zombie ass kickers of all time but for also being one of the first zombie killers in Hollywood. None of these other silver screen zombie slayers would be here if it weren’t for him.

Selena from 28 Days Later

This zombie ass kicker would be one of our first picks for our Zombiepocalypse team. She was ready from the start—resourceful, brave, calm under pressure, and absolutely deadly with a machete. She didn’t hesitate when one of her group became infected, proving she’d be the perfect (terrifying) addition to our ass-kicking squad.

Alice from Resident Evil

Despite the fact that she seems to do all of her killing in slow motion while flying through the air, Alice has proven she’s got the moves to protect us all. Not only has she escaped from a group of cannibals, taken on an entire city of the undead, and kidnapped to be experimented on, she also rode in on a freaking motorcycle then ditched it to use it as a bomb. She’s a badass.
