Many of our favourite authors are women, and there’s a very good reason for that. Women have written some of the greatest stories of all time. Jane Austen, Maya Angelou, J.K. Rowling. Here are some female authors who should definitely be on your TBR lists. (But please don’t stop here. There are so many amazing female writers.)

Laura Dower (From the Files of Madison Finn)

If you like middle grade books about girls, you will love Laura Dower’s writing. She expertly explores a young girl’s experiences, tackling everything from boy troubles to eating disorders. Laura has an uncanny ability to embody the voice of a teenage girl. It’s like being transported through time.

Ellen Hopkins (Crank)

We've been an Ellen Hopkins fan since we first picked up Crank some 10+ years ago. She writes beautiful, devastating stories in the refreshing verse format. Even if you don’t consider yourself a reader, Ellen Hopkins is where it’s at, y’all.

Courtney Summers (Cracked Up to Be)

Courtney Summers is the master of writing "unlikeable" girls, and let’s be honest, the world needs unlikeable girls in fiction. These girls aren’t sweet, pretty little things with big lips and a bad attitude, either. They’re gritty, raw, emotional young women who bring light to the fact that girls deal with some heavy shit. Courtney’s books are transformative, and she should definitely be on your TBR.

Holly Black (The Spiderwick Chronicles)

Get ready to be immersed in the realm of magic and mystery. Holly Black has written critically acclaimed series such as The Spiderwick Chronicles. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of getting lost in that world, do yourself a favour. Holly is a wizard with world-building; you’ll feel like you’re not just reading a story, but a part of the story. It is a magical experience.

Amber Smith (The Last to Let Go)

Amber wrote a beautiful debut novel about a girl who’s raped by her brother’s best friend, and then feels she needs to hide it. It is a stunning look into the world of a girl with a huge secret that she manages to keep for years after the fact. The shame and stigma that Amber manages to explore in her writing is so important.

These are just a few of the many, many talented women writers there are in the world. Expand your horizons. Women are sharing important stories. Embrace them. You won’t be sorry.
