Pairing Lonely Pop Culture Characters

Cheer Up the Lonely Day is coming up and let’s face it: we’re all a little lonely out here. Whether we’re still quarantining (flatten that curve! wear your mask!) or just simply in a melancholy state of mind, we can all use a little company – even if that company comes in the form of fictional characters in our favorite books and movies. And hey, even fictional characters crave a little companionship. And what if they’re simply stuck in the wrong universe. Today, we’re pairing some of our favorite bookish characters with lonely characters from movies and TV. Because everyone deserves a friend!

Amélie & Rosie

We think that Amélie from, yes, Amélie and Rosie from Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston would be incredible friends and here’s why: they’re both incredibly introspective, independent young women with wonderful imaginations and fantasy lives. And sure, they live in completely different countries, but every Beauty and the Beast adaptation gives us French vibes. (Don’t you agree?) And while Rosie’s obsession is out of print fantasy novels and Amélie’s fixation is orphaned photos from her city’s photo booths, they both know the power of a physical object – especially when that object contains all the art and sentimentality in the world. If we had the power to do so, we’d transport Rosie right into 2001 Paris so that she and Amélie could go to Shakespeare & Co. together, followed by a coffee in one of the city’s beautiful cafes.

Ellie & Leanna

We know that Ellie from The Half of It and Leanna from Permanent Record by Mary H.K. Choi would get along so well. Sure, there would be a huge personality clash to start. Leanna is so loud and herself, even when she’s trying to go incognito. And Ellie is so shy that she doesn’t mind hiding behind the papers she writes for other students, at least not at first. But everyone needs someone they can share their true self with, and we’re pretty confident that, with time, Ellie and Leanna will find refuge in each other. We know it’s next to impossible with Leanna’s tour schedule and incredibly observant entourage, but our deepest wish is for Leanna to visit Ellie in the Pacific Northwest so they can just be themselves together – when it’s safe to do so, of course.

Annie & Evvie

One of the worst feelings in the world is the realization that you’ve grown apart from your best friend. We understand the strange and new kind of loneliness that Annie from Bridesmaids and Evvie from Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes are experiencing right now. Both of their best friends are in loving and supportive relationships, which is making less and less time for their own together time. And that doesn’t mean these best friendships are any less valid, but it does mean that there’s room to make new friends to fill out the support network. Which is why we think Annie and Evvie would get along great! We love imagining an alternate universe where Annie rents out a room in Evvie’s house in Maine for a bit. You never know when you’re going to click with your Airbnb host.

Julie & Suzette

If Julie from Lady Bird and Suzette from Little & Lion by Brandy Colbert ever have the chance to meet, we know they’re going to be fast friends. Sure, it probably starts out with Julie and her parents coming over for Shabbat dinner at the Suzette’s home. But both of these young women are sure to bond over the way they feel like the third wheel in their current friend groups. Sometimes you just need to try hanging out with someone new – someone who appreciates you for all your quirks. And we know it’s a bummer that Julie and Suzette don’t live in the same city, but who doesn’t love a road trip up and down the California coast?
