At this point in socially distancing, we’re all getting a little nostalgic for diner food. “Two eggs, any style” is such an open invitation, one that makes the possibilities feel endless. Here at Quirk Books, we’ve been putting our diner day dreams to the test by perfecting our omelets and shimmying as we soft scramble. We’ve even thought about trying to poach an egg! And we want to share our renewed love of eggs with you by recommending the perfect breakfast-book pairings. Ready?

Sunny Side Up

If you love the perfect, gooey yolk of sunny side up eggs – topped with a sprinkling of salt and devoured with buttery sourdough toast – you’re going to love the sweet and salty experience of reading an Emma Straub book. We love all of her work, but her latest novel All Adults Here is particularly touching – and the exact same color of a happy pasture raised egg yolk. Her work is sunny (just like these eggs!) and heartfelt to the very core. All Adults Here covers everything from sibling relationships to aging parents to gender dysmorphia – all in a caring and beautiful way. It’s a book that the entire family can enjoy, while happy tears make the runny eggs even saltier. We just love it.

Eggs in a Basket

Whether you call them “eggs in a basket,” “eggs in a hole,” “bullseye eggs,” or something else entirely, we can all agree that fried eggs nestled in wheat toast is where it’s at. They’re hearty and occasionally portable, just like Jessa’s taxidermy business in Mostly Dead Things by Kristen Arnett. We wouldn’t recommend driving around town while eating eggs, but we also wouldn’t recommend selling a damaged taxidermy boar to a gallery, so what do we know? Jessa and the cast of family members who surround her try so hard to just get things right for themselves, not unlike the process of making eggs in a basket. And, like the eggs, we love all of the attempts along the way.

Spinach Omelet

We’re really proud of how our spinach omelet no longer falls apart when we flip it, so of course we had to include the perfect blend of scramble, greens, and cheese in our breakfast round up. If you’re also feeling like 2020’s Popeye, you’re probably loving books that are both “good for you” and pack a punch. We recommend checking out Untamed by Glennon Doyle. It’s part memoir, part self-help, and one hundred percent motivational. So if you’re trying to tackle a big project – elevating your egg game to include shakshuka, for example – or just want a little kick to get life a little more in gear, spend Sunday morning with this book and that perfect omelet. You’ll thank us later.

Soft Scrambled with Avocado Toast

If your eggs of choice are soft scrambled with avocado toast, there’s no doubt you have California on your mind – even if it’s deep deep in the back of your mind because thinking of traveling anywhere makes your mind go through all sorts of gymnastic exercises. But you can travel to the sunshine any time you like by diving into a book that takes place in the Golden State. Like, for example, The Golden State by Lydia Kiesling. It’s a road trip and a half, perfect for a kitchen table journey with a perfectly ripe avocado – which is almost as good as winning the lottery.
