Joanna Rakoff will be at Book Culture this Wednesday to discuss her memoir My Salinger Year. The book chronicles her time spent working for J.D. Salinger’s agent in the late ‘90s. Part of her job there involved answering J.D. Salinger’s fan mail. Though she has been given an ancient form letter to copy in response, hearing from Salinger’s earnest fans encouraged her to craft heartfelt letters in return. While writing in Salinger’s voice, she found her own.

Since the event is only steps away from the American Museum of Natural History, why not head over there first, since it plays such an important role in The Catcher in the Rye:

“The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody'd move. You could go there a hundred thousand times, and that Eskimo would still be just finished catching those two fish, the birds would still be on their way south, the deers would still be drinking out of that water hole […]. Nobody'd be different. The only thing that would be different would be you. Not that you'd be so much older or anything. It wouldn't be that exactly. You'd just be different, that's all.”

If spending some time at the museum leaves you longing for childhood, head over to Alice’s Tea Cup for a bite to eat.
