A Guide to Pairing Your Comics & Beer

Don't be like Wolverine. Drink responsibly.

Throughout history, mankind has always found reasons to add booze to everything, under the auspices of somehow making it classier. Eventually, people figured out how to use these seemingly tangential excuses for drink as a means of complementing and enhancing their experiences. Drinking wine? For shame! Wine and cheese? Perhaps a side of delicious red steak? Now we’re talking! Drinking in the morning? Forbidden! Orange juice in your cocktail at brunch? Fantastic and socially acceptable! Even in a recession, when people are cutting corners and forced to find new ways to be frugal – everyone still likes to drink.

The point is, drink pairings are classy. And in a world where comic books are finally seen as “cool,” why not add class it up some more? Comic books are an event, after all. I guess what I’m trying to say is this all just a clever ruse for me to combine two of my biggest passions into one delectable event. Comics and Beer – the perfect combination. But like wine and cheese, the real trick is in finding a brew that will somehow improve upon your comic book affair. One that accentuates the proper tones, and enriches the flavor – a beer that you can experience along with your comic book. A beer that betters your comic book, and a comic book that betters your beer, all at the same time.

Here’s a brief guide to pairing your Comics and Beer:

Captain America: Captain America is, well, American. That’s kind of the point. But not in that corporate, militant, bully nationalism-type way. Cap stands for the American ideal, something that everyone can agree with and get behind, that’s not colored by politics and money. That’s why you’ll want to go for a microbrewed American-style lager or pale ale. Something clean, palatable, and easy to drink, something that everyone can agree on but is still wholly American. I’d personally recommend Brooklyn Lager (after his home turf after all), or Sam Adams Lager, or something similar.

Daredevil: The Man Without Fear is, of course, blind, but the rest of his senses are heightened and more than compensate for this. India Pale Ales (IPA) are flavorful and aromatic, thanks to an abundance of hops (historically added to act as a preservative so that English ales might survive the long trip to India). As a result, they engage the senses more than the average beer, and will encourage you to rely on more than just sight, like Daredevil himself. IPAs are also known for their bitterness, and as anyone who’s ever read a Daredevil comic can attest, bitterness and aguish run rampant in the life of Matt Murdock. The higher alcohol content will make your head spin, much like the conspiracies and ninja smoke that Murdock faces himself. Recommended for the uninitiated: Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, Mojo IPA, Harpoon IPA.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children: The Book Trailer!

We're all really excited about the release of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Ransom Riggs' YA debut. The book isn't even out yet, and the film rights have already been sold to 20th Century Fox with Peter Chernin attached to produce.

To help promote the title, we've got an awesome book trailer that Ransom himself helped put together. He flew out to Belgium to shoot in several creepy old houses, bringing back some really fantastic footage. Our friends (and his), Dirty Robber, shot the scenes with Jacob and his grandfather in Los Angeles.

Enjoy!

PS: Want to get into the book a little early? Ransom has been leaking chapters on Mental Floss these past few weeks. Right now you can read up to Chapter 3, free, right here on Quirkbooks.com

He Lived United, So Shall We: Harry Potter Propaganda Posters By Blimpcat

Muggles Are Our Friends by Kate Moore

I love the look of reimagined World War II propoganda art. Unsure of what they look like? ThinkGeek has an awesome selection of them, with artwork depicting the fictional worlds of Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and video games.

Kate Moore, a favorite printmaker of mine known as Blimpcat on Etsy, has created a number of WWII propoganga posters inspired by the universe of Harry Potter. "I like to imagine what it would look like if both sides had their say (rather than just He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named's people)," says Kate on the Etsy pages for the prints.

The prints are 11x17" and "digitally printed on heavy, high-quality glossy cardstock." She stamps and numbers all of her prints individually, so you know you're getting something special.

Have a look at some more of the prints after the break, and be sure to visit Kate's Etsy shop. I own all of her Portal 2 prints, and she does great work.

Friday the 13th: A Playlist for Jason Voorhees

Amazingly, today is the first of three Friday the 13ths to happen in the next 13 weeks!

Mythology and spirituality aside, this date immediately brings me to the movies. And, I'm not talking about the recent retreads or even the last few movies in the original series. We're talking the early days when a boy drowned in Crystal Lake because his counselors weren't paying attention. We're talking Mrs. Vorhees and her hockey-masked son seeking revenge. We're talking guts and gore in the wilderness. Ah... good times.

So, in honor of this momentous 13 week stretch, let's consider what Jason might be listening to while on his murder spree--assuming he had an iPod underneath that hockey mask...

Top 10 Author Appearances on the Simpsons

A few weeks ago, Neil Gaiman made a hilarious appearance on an episode of the Simpsons (pictured above, and as of this post, you can still watch it on Hulu). When Homer and his Ocean's 11-esque assembled crew decide to team up and write a Young Adult novel, Gaiman jumps in to help make it happen. Unfortunately, the publisher tries to alter the story, and the gang of would-be-novelists (and a multiple award winning one) plan a heist to get it back and put the original in stores.

Quote of the episode? Gaiman exclaiming "I've heisted my way to the bestseller list once again. And the most brilliant part is... I don't even know how to read!" Well, either that or Homer hoping they remember to "put in enough steampunk. Whatever that is."

Anyhow, the episode got me thinking about other awesome authors cameos I've caught on the Simpsons. Lisa being dismissed by Amy Tan, Alan Moore with rippling muscles, Michael Chabon and Jonathan Franzen getting into a fight... ah, so many brilliant moments. I've rounded up my Top 10 here (in no particular order), though there are certainly many more. If I missed a favorite of yours, leave it in the comments!

1. Amy Tan: The celebrated author of The Joy Luck Club makes an appearance in the 'Insane Clown Poppy' episode, speaking at the Springfield Festival of Books.

Lisa tries to compliment Tan on her work, to which Tan hilariously responds "no, no, that’s not what I meant at all. I can’t believe how wrong you got it. Just sit down, I’m embarrassed for both of us."

Stephen King also makes an appearance in this episode, cackling madly about a supposedly non-horror title he's hard at work on.

2. Thomas Pynchon: This notoriously reclusive author actually made TWO appearances on the Simpsons. He pops up in the episodes Diatribe of a Mad Housewife (clip above), in which Marge writes a romance novel and he "provides" a quote, and All's Fair in Oven War.

3. J.K. Rowling: I won't lie to you, Quirk fans. I didn't get into Harry Potter until fairly recently, when Broetry author Brian McGackin threatened not to speak to me until I read the entire series. I'm about halfway through Order of the Phoenix as of this posting, and thankfully, Brian and I are on speaking terms once again.

As a result though, this is probably my favorite author appearance on the Simpsons. I rediscovered it while looking up author cameos, and thanks to Brian, I can finally appreciate how funny it is.

Halloween Puts Broetry in Motion @ the Nightmares Fear Factory

We all know that bros can be downright poetic, but are these seemingly unflappable dudes afraid of anything? As it turns out, they are, especially during trick or treat time.

Thus in what surely will go down as the finest meme of the 2011 Halloween season, the Niagara Falls haunted house Nightmares Fear Factory has been posting pictures of dudebros who have been scared silly by the attraction. For today’s moment of Zen, check out this photo gallery.

These hilarious fear pics prove that behind their carefully crafted masculine exteriors, bros get terrified by zombies and ghosts too.

See? They’re just like us!
