UNDERCOVER GOLF

Meticulously vacuum your carpet so the pile faces the same direction, then walk around in a random path. Stop and take a look at the varying grain. Learn to identify when the carpet is laying with the grain or against it, and you’ll be able to instinctually read the green during your next golf game.

Reading greens while vacuuming

Step 1. Lower yourself so that your eyes are just slightly above the carpet. Look at the area you will be vacuuming and scan for extraneous dirt.

Step 2. Examine the grain of the carpet. The darker areas on the carpet signify the back of the pile—this is equivalent to putting against the grain. The lighter areas on the carpet signify the front of the pile, or putting with the grain. (The same is true on the green: darker areas indicate that you’re putting against the grain, and vice versa.)

Step 3. Note the consistency of the grain. Most carpets will have areas that are both against and with the grain—places where people have scuffed their feet. Your goal is to level the grain of the carpet in the entire room.

Step 4. Begin to vacuum from one end of the room to the other. Consistently vacuum either away from you or toward you—only in one direction. Pick up the vacuum when you finish a stroke and set it down next to the area you just vacuumed. Notice how the grain of the carpet of the line you vacuumed moves in the same direction. If the grain is not consistent, reset the vacuum to a lower pile height and repeat until the entire room is finished.

Step 5. Turn off the vacuum and set it aside.

Step 6. Walk in a random pattern around the room. Remove your shoes so as not to soil the newly vacuumed surface or create more static electricity on the pile. Use variable steps—short, long, dragging, and skipping.

Step 7. Stand in the center of the room and read the carpet. From an upright position, you should be able to easily read the grain of your steps. Notice the lighter areas and darker areas and make a mental note of the corresponding grain of the carpet. Change your position in the room and reread the carpet. Focus on training your mind to register, “against the grain,” or “with the grain,” when you see dark or light patches, respectively.
