UNDERCOVER GOLF

While the light is red, set your left hand in place around the steering wheel, with your last three fingers tucked around.

Squeeze your thumb and forefinger together and fold your thumb over the steering wheel. When the light turns green, you will be prepared to confidently steer your car.

Training your left hand grip while stuck in traffic

Step 1. Place your left hand behind the steering wheel. With your hand flat and your palm facing you, set your left hand behind the wheel at about 10 o’clock, fingers aimed to the right and thumb straight up. With the wheel set between the base and first joint of your index finger, the natural curve of the wheel will align properly to your finger grip, spanning the base of your index finger to the callous pad of your pinkie. This mimics the club’s placement in a proper left-hand grip. Check to see whether traffic is moving yet.

Step 2. Close your last three fingers around the steering wheel. Curl your pinkie, ring, and middle fingers around the steering wheel. Ensure that your grasp is in your fingers and not your palm. Your thumb and forefinger should remain off the wheel, naturally forming a "trigger finger" position.

Step 3. Squeeze your left thumb and forefinger together. Press from the base of your thumb and align your thumb and index finger so that the middle joint of your thumb touches the side of your index knuckle. Notice the “V” formed between the pad of your thumb and your forefinger, with the base of the "V" at the point where the two come together.

Step 4. Fold your thumb over the steering wheel so that it rests on the inside of the wheel. Let your index finger close naturally around the wheel. Your hand should now be placed as if it were around a club.

Step 5. Adjust your grip pressure points. Press the wheel between your bottom three fingers and the meaty pad (pinkie side) at the base of your hand—about an inch (2.5 cm) above where your hand connects to your wrist. Note that the base of your three fingers and the pad are the pressure points with which you will hold your golf club with your left hand. Continue to grip and control the steering wheel with your left hand as you inch forward in traffic.

Step 6. Feel the grip for about 1 minute, then release. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 until the light changes, traffic clears, or your left-hand grip is instinctive.
